Who's More Important, You or Others?

Although it is important to look out for others, the meaning of survival is to keep yourself alive. However, Scrooge's example of his own solitary survival is a poor one. He most certainly had enough dough to keep himself alive. The difference is, he was fortunate enough to the money for his own survival and to be comfortable, whether he chose to make himself or not. He had no excuse to not help the poor or needy. Other, however, have only enough to keep their family and themselves alive (cough, Bob Cratchit, cough, cough), but they are the ones would be more willing to give to others. They realize the importance of giving to the even less fortunate, because they themselves have been there.

If people lived by the rule to give to others when they needed help, everone would be better off. The richer would feel better about themselves, and the needy would have the simple life essentials of food or comforts. And we all like food and life comforts, don't we?
